Dalaman Information
Dalaman is a district, as well as the central town of that district, situated on the southwestern coast of Turkey, in the Muğla Province. Dalaman is known for its international airport, Dalaman International Airport, which serves as a gateway to the tourists who visit this part of Turkey every year, heading especially to seaside resorts to the west and east of Dalaman such as Marmaris, Fethiye, Sarigerme, Köyceğiz, Dalyan, Ölüdeniz and Hisarönü. One of the most beautiful of all Mediterranean beaches with 10 km of long white sand, crystal blue waters and pine-covered slopes is in Dalaman. There are many attractions in this one area such as the Sulphur thermals which are mud baths for skin therapy, rafting on the Dalaman River, camping, diving, beautiful beaches, water sport utilities, a lake, hunting and fishing on the river or at the beach.
Getting There
The airport is situated about 6 kilometers south of Dalaman town center, on Turkey’s southwest Mediterranean coast. Daily flights connect with Istanbul, while direct flights (both scheduled and charter) to and from major European cities occur several times weekly. This new and much larger international terminal was completed in 2006 and has greatly improved traffic in and out of the south coast area.
Getting Around
Havas airport buses travel from the airport to Dalyan, Marmaris and Fethiye, stopping at towns along the way, and private transfer services meet planes and transport passengers to Dalyan, Marmaris, Fethiye and points in between. Dalaman's Otogar (bus station) has useful intercity bus service to other cities and towns in Turkey, but you'll have to take a taxi the 6 km from Dalaman Airport to the bus station in the town center.
What To See
Situated in south west Turkey, Dalaman is a beautiful resort probably mostly renowned for its international airport, Dalaman International Airport. Traditionally, and still today, the main function of Dalaman was to act as a gateway to a large variety of other Turkish resorts. Preservation by environmental agencies means that Dalaman’s stretch of natural beach is being discovered as a slightly quieter and more peaceful Turkish holiday alternative and the area itself is growing in popularity as a holiday destination. Dalaman itself is a fast growing Turkish Mediterranean town south of the coastal road. Before, most holiday makers just passed through Dalaman Airport on to their holiday resort. Through the Government, Dalaman has been declared a protected tourist area. This means that if anyone wishes to invest in an area of Turkey, the Government in Ankara will direct them to these areas. There are strict regulations on buildings, for example, in the town the number of floors can only be a maximum of four, while outside of town they can only be two or three. So it will never lose its wonderful views. Now the Agricultural Ministry has passed ownership of the states’ farm to the tourist industry for elite development. This covers a vast area with a proposed golf course and hotels being built along this beautiful coast. There are serious plans for a new yacht marina to begin being built within this year. The airports’ new terminal has been completed which means direct flights to Dalaman airport from many European cities. The airport will then have a capacity of 10 million visitors. Dalaman airport will have the third biggest international capacity in Turkey. Many tourists will have more opportunities to spend their holidays in and around Dalaman all year round.
Things To Do
Dalaman is now rapidly becoming an investment area for many Europeans purchasing property for investment in Turkey. This seems due to many factors including the town being designated a main tourist area and plans for new marinas and a new golf course are underway. River rafting on the Dalaman River offers great day trips for the adventure traveler. Dalaman has its own huge natural beach, although not overly commercial yet it is still pleasant and hosts lots of wildlife. There is also a tunnel that now connects the seaside town of Gocek and Dalaman, reducing the journey to only a 5 or 10 minutes drive.
Food And Drink
Dalaman Airport's prices in the food and drink outlets are simply outrageous. If you are arriving or departing from the airport it would be wise to stop in Dalaman beforehand at a local restaurant. The Begonvil, situated behind the Belideye Park, set in a tranquil garden area, with inside and outside dining. On some evening live Turkish music is played. The Sec Restaurant, opposite the main square and taxi rank, serves Turkish cuisine and beer. Sofra Restaurant, along the main high street on the left, serves Turkish food, Steaks and Dondurma but no beer. They also do a take away service. Palmiye Restaurant, along the airport road near the Mugla / Fethiye highway. Serves a selection of European style food and alcohol. In the winter you can sit inside by a rather large open wood fire.
